What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged veins that can develop anywhere in your body but most often affect your legs. Though varicose veins may develop deep in your legs, they typically bulge out at the surface, causing unattractive, twisted, purplish-blue veins.

Though most people view varicose veins as a cosmetic problem, they’re a sign of venous disease that can cause serious complications.

You develop varicose veins when one-way valves in the vein become dysfunctional. Normally, the valves allow blood to flow up your leg and then close to stop it from going backward. When a valve fails, the blood refluxes and accumulates in the vein, a condition called venous insufficiency.

VenaSeal is a nonthermal treatment for varicose veins and venous insufficiency. This treatment consists of an innovative medical adhesive that seals the vein walls, closing the dysfunctional vein.

After treatment with VenaSeal, your varicose veins disappear, and your appearance improves. Additionally, your body reroutes blood flow through healthy veins, providing relief from your symptoms by preventing or treating problems caused by venous insufficiency.

What happens during a VenaSeal procedure?

Dr. Patel performs your VenaSeal procedure in the office as an outpatient visit. He makes a tiny cut that allows him to insert the VenaSeal catheter into your vein and then uses real-time imaging to guide it to the diseased vein.

He releases the adhesive from the catheter and applies pressure to seal the vein closed. After closing the dysfunctional vein, he removes the catheter and applies a bandage.

After your VenaSeal procedure, you have a shorter recovery time compared to thermal ablation procedures. You also don’t need to wear compression stockings.
